What is a Dietitian?

A dietitian is a credentialed professional that has undergone 6 years of school and clinical rotations where they plan and conduct food service, or nutritional programs, to help people improve  relationships with food and lead healthier lives.

With a focus on a patient’s health, dietitian duties may include:

  • Assessment of health and nutritional needs
  • Counseling on relationship with food and eating habits
  • Development of nutrition plans based on the patient’s preferences, needs, and budget
  • The continuing evaluation and monitoring patients nutritional needs
  • To provide educational on types of foods groups, balance, preference and nutritional needs
  • addressing concerns around illness, GI function, or allergies

Of course, this is a general list of services. Patient’s care plans are tailored to their needs and include continuing support through open communication.

Nutrition is a complex subject. Every person is unique and has unique needs when it comes to food. Which is why a dietitian can be the key in someone’s journey. With their knowledge, training, and expertise, they can be the guide to finding an improved relationship with food.

Dietitian Vs Nutritionist

They can both help people develop sustainable, wholesome eating habits, and overall improve relationships with food to remain healthy.

Though the goal may be the same, the credentials and titles are very different.

Dietitians require the completion of at least a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and experience. A nutritionist can be someone that has an interest in nutrition, but there are no educational requirements,  experience requirements or board regulation.

To operate, dietitians need a national board certification after passing a board exam and, in some states, a license. Dietitians are now called “registered Dietitian nutritionists” in an effort for the board to distinguish the difference between a registered dietitian and nutritionist. I know this can get confusing. Basically a dietitian is also a nutritionist, but someone who is a nutritionist is not necessarily a registered dietitian.  There is not a regulating board or requirement to use the title of nutritionist in most states.

In the end, while both dietitians and nutritionists may share a goal, the approach, experience  and treatment vary. The difference in experience and training will determine the effectiveness of any care plan. So, when looking for support, always double-check the care provider’s credentials to ensure you know their qualifications.
