Adolescent & Teen Nutrition Counseling

Fostering Lifelong Well-being

The way we eat affects both our physical and mental health, especially for teens and adolescents who are still growing. Dealing with societal pressures, friends, and social media can sometimes lead to unhealthy relationships with food and body image. We believe in promoting lifelong well-being through counseling that supports and removes food judgments. We embrace all types of foods and encourage joyful movement while providing personalized care that celebrates diversity.

Understanding Adolescent and Teen Counseling:

Adolescents and teens can face a range of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and other specified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED), which can be supported through nutrition counseling. Nutrition counseling means a dietitian offers personalized support tailored to the individual needs and lifestyle of the patient. Regular meetings allow the dietitian to set goals, devise action plans, and provide tools for establishing healthy, long-term eating habits.

Eating disorder treatment for teens.
  1. Preoccupation with Food: Preoccupation can manifest in various ways, such as constantly thinking about food, excessively planning meals, or having an intense fear of certain foods.
  2. Changes in Eating Habits: Shifts in eating patterns such as avoiding certain food groups, eating very slow or fast, or skipping meals entirely.
  3. Body Comments or Comparisons: An intense focus on body shape, size, and appearance, fear of weight gain or body dissatisfaction.
  4. Social Withdrawal: A tendency to withdraw from social activities, especially those involving food or eating.
  5. Food Rules: Having food judgements, counting calories, or labeling foods as good or bad.

Eating disorder dietitians are nutrition specialists who help individuals with disordered eating. Unlike nutritionists, they are experts in this area and are able to create personalized meal plans, clear up misconceptions, and offer coping strategies. Their goal is to help the patient build a positive relationship with food and their bodies while improving their overall well-being.

During counseling sessions, the dietitian addresses various aspects to support the patient’s unique needs. This involves handling school challenges, providing support for physical activity, and teaching skills for independent settings to include all foods without overwhelming stress. Overall, nutrition counseling brings benefits like reduced anxiety, balanced nutrition, a clearer understanding of the body’s needs, and awareness of food-related triggers.
