Finding Freedom from Patterns

Rediscovering Joy Beyond Orthorexia

It’s perfectly fine to strive for a healthy lifestyle, but things take a turn when it becomes obsessive and starts affecting our physical and mental well-being. At Nutrition Braved, we understand the challenges of overcoming these behaviors, and we’re here for you! Our goal is to guide you towards rediscovering the joy in food and fostering a healthy relationship with it—free from constant stress and anxiety.

Understanding Orthorexia:

While orthorexia is not yet clinically recognized as an eating disorder, it remains a significant condition characterized by hyperfocus and obsessive ‘healthy’ eating behaviors. Many health professionals view its signs and symptoms as critical, affecting not only mental well-being but also physical health. If left unaddressed, it can potentially lead to nutritional deficiencies and malnutrition.

Dieting is a primary factor that can contribute to orthorexia. It often promotes the notion of ‘clean’ or ‘healthy’ eating, which can spiral into obsession and trigger orthorexic tendencies. Other behaviors that might increase the risk include:

  • Wanting to lose weight or improve appearance
  • Trying to prevent illnesses or diseases
  • Avoiding foods due to known or suspected allergies
  • Feeling anxious about food sources or the presence of chemicals in foods

These behaviors differ from person to person. Some typical signs include:

  • Obsessing over food quality or ‘cleanliness’
  • Having rigid eating habits
  • Imposing extreme food restrictions
  • Completely avoiding ‘junk’ or ‘unhealthy’ foods
  • Skipping gatherings or events centered around food
  • Experiencing constant health concerns
  • Feeling anxious about eating out
  • Obsessively checking food labels

The impact of the condition differs for each person. Yet, for those following very strict eating patterns, it not only affects their quality of life—leading to feelings of isolation, stress, and anxiety—but it also limits the variety of nutrients they receive, due to little diversity in their diet. Over time, this can result in malnutrition.
