Understanding PCOS
Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS is an endocrine condition that is characterized by a hormonal imbalance. Around 8-13% of women have PCOS, and over half of them remain undiagnosed. It often leads to frustration due to challenging symptoms that are tough to manage without guidance. Food plays a role in managing PCOS, but knowing which foods help can be hard, especially if you’re recovering from disordered eating.
Symptoms may differ depending on the individual, but the most common ones are:
- Missed periods, irregular periods, or very light periods
- Excess hair growth
- Acne
- Infertility
The exact cause of PCOS remains unknown, but it’s believed to result from a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Factors such as insulin resistance, or having a family history of PCOS might increase the likelihood of developing this condition.
Because of the hormonal imbalance from this condition, you might crave carbohydrates more often. This is especially common for those with insulin resistance, as high insulin levels can boost carbohydrate cravings.
- There is no specific diet for PCOS, therefore we take a personalized approach with each patient. However, a balanced all food groups whole grains, lean meats, fruits, and vegetables, can help to manage some of the symptoms.
